Biologic Therapy for Severe, Uncontrolled Asthma in Plantation, FL

If you have been diagnosed with severe asthma and continue to experience frequent flare-ups, emergency visits, or oral corticosteroid dependence despite using standard inhalers, you may be a candidate for biologic therapy. Advanced Asthma Clinic — led by board-certified pulmonologist Dr. Frank Hull — offers a full range of FDA-approved biologic treatments for adults with severe, type 2 asthma in Plantation, Broward County, and throughout South Florida.

What Is Biologic Therapy for Asthma?

Biologic therapies are injectable medications derived from living cells that target specific proteins in the immune system driving severe asthma. Unlike traditional bronchodilators or inhaled corticosteroids — which manage symptoms broadly — biologics work at a molecular level, blocking the inflammation pathways responsible for asthma attacks in patients whose disease is not controlled by standard treatments.

Biologic therapy is not for everyone. It is designed for patients with severe, persistent asthma — typically characterized by:

  • Two or more asthma attacks per year requiring oral corticosteroids
  • Ongoing symptoms despite optimized inhaled therapy (high-dose ICS + LABA)
  • Specific biomarker profiles such as elevated blood eosinophils, high FeNO (fractional exhaled nitric oxide), or allergen sensitization

At Advanced Asthma Clinic, Dr. Hull evaluates each patient's biomarker profile, triggers, and asthma phenotype before recommending any biologic. A personalized treatment plan — not a one-size-fits-all approach — is the standard here.

FDA-Approved Biologics Available at Our Plantation Clinic

Dupilumab (Dupixent) — Anti-IL-4/IL-13

Dupilumab targets the IL-4 and IL-13 pathways, which are central drivers of type 2 inflammation. It is indicated for moderate-to-severe eosinophilic asthma or oral corticosteroid-dependent asthma. Clinical trials have demonstrated significant reductions in severe exacerbations and improvements in lung function.

Dupilumab is self-administered by subcutaneous injection every two weeks after an initial loading dose administered in the clinic.

Mepolizumab (Nucala) — Anti-IL-5

Mepolizumab blocks interleukin-5 (IL-5), the cytokine responsible for the growth, activation, and survival of eosinophils. It is indicated for patients with severe eosinophilic asthma (blood eosinophils of 150 cells per microliter or higher at initiation, or 300 or higher in the prior 12 months).

Mepolizumab is administered as a subcutaneous injection every four weeks, typically in the clinic.

Benralizumab (Fasenra) — Anti-IL-5Rα

Benralizumab targets the IL-5 receptor directly on eosinophils, leading to rapid and near-complete eosinophil depletion. It is indicated for severe eosinophilic asthma and is given every four weeks for three doses, then every eight weeks — one of the least frequent dosing schedules available.

Tezepelumab (Tezspire) — Anti-TSLP

Tezepelumab is the broadest-acting biologic currently available for severe asthma. It targets thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), an epithelial cytokine that initiates the inflammatory cascade upstream of IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13. Because it acts at the top of the inflammatory pathway, tezepelumab benefits patients regardless of eosinophil count — including those with non-eosinophilic or mixed phenotype asthma.

Tezepelumab is given every four weeks by subcutaneous injection.

Omalizumab (Xolair) — Anti-IgE

Omalizumab was the first biologic approved for asthma. It binds free immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the blood, blocking the allergic cascade. It is indicated for moderate-to-severe allergic asthma in patients sensitized to perennial allergens whose symptoms are not controlled with inhaled corticosteroids.

How Dr. Hull Selects the Right Biologic for You

There is no universal biologic for severe asthma. Matching the right agent to the right patient requires careful phenotyping. During your evaluation at Advanced Asthma Clinic, Dr. Hull will review:

  • Blood eosinophil count — key for mepolizumab, benralizumab, and dupilumab selection
  • FeNO (fractional exhaled nitric oxide) — elevated levels indicate type 2 airway inflammation responsive to dupilumab or tezepelumab
  • Total serum IgE and allergen panel — determines eligibility for omalizumab
  • Oral corticosteroid use history — frequency and dose inform severity and agent choice
  • Asthma triggers and phenotype — allergic, eosinophilic, exercise-induced, occupational, or mixed

Dr. Hull has more than 20 years of clinical experience in pulmonary medicine and active involvement in clinical research, including ongoing biologic trials at our Plantation facility. Patients may also have access to investigational therapies not yet widely available.

Who Is a Candidate for Biologic Therapy?

You may benefit from biologic therapy if:

  • Your asthma is classified as severe persistent
  • You have had two or more exacerbations requiring oral corticosteroids in the past year
  • You rely on oral corticosteroids daily or near-daily to control symptoms
  • Your quality of life is significantly impaired despite optimized standard inhaler therapy
  • You have high blood eosinophil counts, elevated FeNO, or confirmed allergen sensitization

Insurance coverage for FDA-approved biologics is available through most major plans, including Medicare Part B and Medicaid in many cases. Dr. Hull's team assists patients in navigating prior authorization and manufacturer patient assistance programs.

Better Breathing Grant Program

Advanced Asthma Clinic offers the Better Breathing Grant program for patients who face financial barriers to accessing specialist care or evaluation. Contact our office to ask about eligibility.

Clinical Trials in Biologic Therapy — Plantation, FL
